Surprises

My time in Burundi has been full of surprises.  I want to share a few of them with you.

Emma was my first big surprise.  She is from northern Ireland, and God led her to Discovery School this school year to teach a 5th grade class (called Primary 6 or P6 here). We have bonded well and serve a lot together.  Really, when I think about it, I would not venture out downtown Bujumbura nearly as much without her with me.  She has such a loving, joyful heart for people.

Geovanie is my second surprise.  She meets with me on Saturdays–helping me learn Kirundi.  But God really brought us together to share our lives, and pray together.  She is so confident in God, and is so much fun!  It has been such a blessing to get to know her, and have her in my life. We have seen God do wonders as we pray over things together!

Achim is my third surprise.  (I find it so funny that all my pictures of him involve him with food–his nickname is Double, because he loves to have two helpings of food!).  He is the Bible teacher for the 9th graders at Discovery School.  One day he invited me to join him in his class, and now I try to go as often as I can!  I knew the first time I went that it was a God moment, and I wanted to be a part of it.  He has a heart for God, and worship music.  He is an amazing worshiper with song, drum, guitar–even finger snapping! And being with the 9th graders Bible class is a ministry I believe God wants me to be part of.

This surprise is still very new.  Scott and Jolene (couple at upper right) invited a group of teachers and me to a game night–which as it turned out, we never played any games!  We had such rich discussion that a life group was born that night–we all had a desire to grow in the Lord together.  We meet every Friday night now…and are starting to pray about what God wants us to do regarding the Muslim population in Bujumbura.  That is another great surprise!  If you’ve read my blogs, you know I’ve been praying about that for some time!

I have barely been here  four months, and already God is working on many fronts–not to mention with my students, my special education team, with my cousin Jesse, his wife Joy, and their great boys.  What a joy to look for what He is doing and join Him!
